Executive AI programs compared: what the brochures do not tell you

Executives in a live AI training session

You typed "AI program for executives". You opened MIT, Oxford, Wharton and two names you had never heard of. An hour later every tab says the same thing: renowned faculty, a certificate, flexible learning, a glossy video. None of them tells you which one you will still be using three months from now.

The short answer: compare executive AI programs on four things the brochures blur, not on the logo. How much of the teaching is live. How many hours a week it really takes, and on whose problems. What you will have built at the end. And who learns next to you. A six-week online course from a top school is a good way to understand AI. In my experience it is rarely enough to change how you work on Monday morning. For that you need a longer, live format that starts from your own problems.

Three school programs, checked at the source

I took three programs that come up again and again when executives ask this question and read their official pages on 22 October 2026. I added ours on the last line, because hiding it would be worse, and because it shows a different model. Prices and dates move: check them again before you enroll.

Read the table line by line and the logos stop mattering. Two programs are six weeks of mostly recorded content. One is a long, premium hybrid at seven times the price of the MIT Sloan course. The last one is built around a live session every week. Four different products sold under the same words.

Question one: how much of it is live?

"Self-paced" is not a flaw. It means you watch recorded content within weekly modules, alone, when you find the time. Oxford says so plainly on its page: all modules are recorded, live sessions do not count towards the final grade.

So be honest with yourself. Over the last three months, how many hours did you spend learning AI on your own? If the answer is close to zero, a recorded course will not change that next quarter. A live slot gets blocked in the calendar like a board meeting. A video gets pushed to Sunday night, then to never. I went through this in more detail in AI bootcamp or classic training.

Question two: what does the week cost you, and on whose problems?

The published figures look similar: 6 to 8 hours a week for MIT Sloan over six weeks, 5 hours a week for MIT xPRO over six to seven months. The number that matters is not the total. It is whether those hours land on your real work or on an exercise designed for everybody.

One hour spent rebuilding your own board pack with AI teaches you more than three hours on someone else's case. That is my view after training more than 600 leaders, not a study. It is also why our format asks for 1h30 live and about one hour of practice a week, on your files, and nothing more. If you are wondering whether a 12-week program fits next to a full-time job: it does when the homework is your job.

Question three: what will you have built at the end?

A certificate proves you attended. Ask the admissions team what you walk out with that you will use on a Monday: AI routines for your own week, or a first use case already running in your team.

You do not get into AI to look at AI. You get in through the problem that keeps you up at night. I refuse to run training that works like a theme-park ride, impressive for two hours and then you go home unable to drive it yourself. If a program never asks about your problems before day one, you already know what kind of ride it is.

Question four: who is in the room?

In our cohorts, I see most of the learning come from the peers, not from me. A leader who shows the room what actually worked in their own company moves it more than any slide. So ask the admissions team how many people sit in a cohort and whether you will ever speak with them live.

When do executive AI cohorts start?

Nothing on these pages points to an academic season. On 22 October 2026, the three school programs above listed their next starts on 11 November 2026 (Oxford), 18 November 2026 (MIT Sloan) and 18 February 2027 (MIT xPRO, which shows more dates). You do not need to wait for September.

The real question is whether your next weeks are protected. Pick the intake that avoids your budget season or your year-end close, not the earliest one.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a live-cohort AI leadership course for senior managers, rather than self-paced video?

Yes. Some long programs from business schools are listed as hybrid, like MIT xPRO's AI for Senior Executives, and specialist programs run live cohorts with a session every week, like our AI Leadership Program (in French for now). Before you enroll, check how much of the teaching is live on the program's own page: "self-paced" means recorded modules you follow alone.

Can I complete a 12-week AI leadership program while working full time?

Yes, if the program is built for a full agenda and the work happens on your own cases. Check the weekly time the program publishes: our bootcamp asks for one 1h30 live session a week plus about one hour of practice. Then block those slots in your calendar before the first session, not after.

What time of year do executive AI cohorts usually begin?

There is no fixed season. On 22 October 2026, the official pages of Oxford's AI programme, MIT Sloan's AI strategy course and MIT xPRO's AI for Senior Executives listed their next starts on 11 November 2026, 18 November 2026 and 18 February 2027. Pick the intake that avoids your busiest weeks rather than the earliest one.
